The laser and the software are OK. Turns out there is a newer version of the software on the m/f website that works perfectly well with .jpg files. This is easy enough to download but set my Anti-Virus (AVG) alert off. I'm pretty sure it's a false positive as this is mentioned in other reviews. Finally I had to play with the burn-time to get the best results for different materials. If the material burns easily then setting a long burn time resulted in more burn and thus less detail. I found burning images that are simple (ie outlines, words, shapes) it works really well. It will burn converted photos but it takes ages! A one inch image took >40mins. The result was okay, but not great. Note that the burning/engraving produced small amounts of smoke in dark areas of the image, so I had the unit near and open window.

This item was NOT trivial to get up and running, but I got there and I'm pleased with the results. Physical setup was easy and the driver installed without any issues (Win 8). The manual is written in English. My hurdle was loading images into the software that came with the unit. There was a number of sample .jpg files that came along with the software on a usb stick. The software would accept these but not show a preview! When I uploaded the image to the engraver it went bonkers; trying to move the laser position beyond it's physical limits! This created an awful noise as the positioning motors were continuously binding. However I converted the images from .jpg to .gif and hey presto the software and the unit were happy. (Worked with .png too)

It's an interesting device, consisting of what appears to be two optical drive rails mounted to a table and a powerful laser, with a micro-controller that has labeled buttons that appear to be some of the same controls from the software, yet they aren't mentioned at all in the manual, nor have I seen any mentions of them online. I will say that I wish they changed the design of the case slightly in the back to make it sturdier, so that they could remove the front posts. That way with light, but large objects, you can still engrave along the edge/corner. It appears that the Image Size in the product specification is incorrect, or misleading. The software will take any size image (at least that I have tried) and scale it down. However, it appears the maximum resolution you can achieve with an engraving is 490 x 490. This can be demonstrated by running a solid black image and seeing that the X and Y coordinates only count from 0 to 489, giving us 490 x 490. Plus, this is the only resolution where the software stops downscaling the image. The focusing head/screw has a lot of play in it regardless of what distance it is focused at, even though it is securely screwed into the laser housing; yet it hasn't once shown any signs of moving during an engraving. So while it is worrisome, it isn't actually a problem it seems. Overall, the software is easy to install and use. It's a shame there is no Cancel button, meaning you are forced to either unplug the device (by the data cable, as the power for the laser and the micro-controller comes from that. The power cable seems to only power the stepper motors.) or use the "Reboot" button. This seems to be harmless when I have tried it in the past, and just triggers the startup routine, while the laser is powered down to locating/focusing brightness. While the software does a pretty nice job of scaling, and even doing its own black & white/dithering attempt with your image, if you want crisp quality you do it yourself. When you load the image, you get the left which is a mostly untouched (completely untouched if you have an image 490 x 490, or less, and purely black & white image), and the right that is its attempt to dither it for a gray-scale effect. So far I have had success with all sorts of paper, wood, and dark plastic. Any bright or transparent/translucent plastics need to be covered with a dark color such as with the included dry erase marker, and then they engrave just fine! Mine came with a CD, rather than the advertised flash card and memory card reader. I'm slightly disappointed in that too. But they didn't mention the rubber mat it comes with, so instead of strapping your item down with the rubber bands, you can simply set the mat on the table and set your item on that, and it'll hold. In the end, I do quite enjoy this little laser, and have not had any real problems with it, once I figured out its nuances.

This item is brilliant for what I need it to do. I was buying personalised engraved USB drives with boxes previously for $45 each to supply photos to my clients. I bought this machine and now do my own engraving on the exact same drives with my costs being only pay for each USB drive. A huge cost saving. Once you suss it out you will have hours of fun burning text and images onto any wood, plastic, leather, paper, or card that you can get your hands on. I feel the item is let down by a decent set of instructions. My biggest gripe being that there are no guidelines on burn times. The laser burntimes are adjustable from 1ms to 240ms and there is no guidance on approximately how long each different material should need. We don't even get ballpark figures, and it's left up to us to figure it out ourselves through trial and error. For info, I use a burn time of 40ms for engraving bamboo USBs. This is more than adequate. If you've got the time to work this out for yourself then I definitely recommend it.

Great product! The software does throw up a false positive with Avast, but it was scanned and all was well with the install. I followed the instructions which are simple and short. If you do it step by step you'll have no problems. It worked first time on an old XP machine I keep for 3d printing software. Within 5 mins I had engraved an image onto some wood. It was clear and amazingly quick. I left the settings as is on the software burn time 60 and this seemed fine, since then I have tried other materials and altered burn times and its been fine. I think if you want something to have fun with and make some items look professional you will not go wrong with this one. I have also used it with a MAC and after looking online (mainly instructables) there were some interesting links and software for free for the MAC and this worked well too. The SD card that came with it also had some MAC software with it too. i will recommend it.
